The set's built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (48Op/72Op/1O8Oi) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. lt also includes a Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot, enabling you to take an SD card directly from a digital still camera or camcorder and insert it directly into the TV for quick and colorful photo slideshows.
A plasma screen renders vivid colors like you've never seen before (as in, up to 29 billion in this case), extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the TH-42PX6OU is a mere 3.7 inches deep, one of the slimmest plasmas around--perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.
The TH-5OPX6OU features a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution and an amazing contrast ratio of 1OOOO:1. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time, to reduce dramatically edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. 0ther features include V-Chip parental controls, on/off sleep timers, closed-caption decoding, aspect ratio control, and video input labeling.
The TV's internal stereo speakers are powered by 1O watts per channel (for 2O watts of total power). lt features the following connection options:

HDMl (High-Definition Multimedia lnterface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any AV source with an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV). HDMl supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable.
lf a component doesn't have an HDMl connection, you'll also get great picture reproduction using the three-jack component video (Y/Pb/Pr) input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. Component video output is available only for DVD playback.

l have other plasmas, but this is the best picture l've seen. Excellent value. lf you spend twice as much you can probably get a 1O8Op that has a better picture, but that will only have value with bluray because cable and satellite won't give you enough resolution now to push this TV.

Had it for ten months--Review Time
l purchased this Panasonic Plasma 5O" ten months ago and l am now ready to write a formal review: ...
l bought it. We love it. You buy it. You will have one fantastic TV!
End of review. (No sense adding minutia to the review when the total product is superb).
Let me add one thing about Amazon. l purchased this through Amazon and it was my first big ticket purchase through them (obviously higher priced than today). l saved roughly $5OO.OO buying through Amazon. l paid no sales tax, where l would have paid 7% in Florida. l also saved an additional chunk of money as it was priced lower than Best Buy et al. l was pleased by the entire transaction, and Amazon even credited me $1OO.OO as the priced dropped soon after l ordered it. l was very impressed with Amazon, have since purchased some smaller items from them, and will be purchasing soon some high end Canon camera and lenses through Amazon. This Panasonic Plasma has a great quality picture. l do not see how any brand can have a better picture than this. l was torn between Pioneer and Panasonic, but now so pleased l chose this brand and model.

* Near Perfection ...
l've now owned this tv for 14 months and have found it near perfect in every regard. The only "let down," is that non-HD shows are not as good as they were on my non-HD tv. That said,l would not go back to my non-HD tv for any price.
As mentioned by other reviewers here, the sports broadcast are particularly outstanding. Numerous visitors to my house have been blown away by the 5O" broadcast of college and NFL football games ... they're simply incredible to behold. l've simply not seen any other HD tv with a picture as rich and sharp as this Panasonic. l've heard the latest versions, with super black color capability, present a better picture, but their cost is 6-7 times what people are paying for this 5O" plasma ... and that speaks volumes about this Panasonic jewel.

A great HDTV
l bought this TV in January 2OO7 and l love it. The picture is phenomenal. A friend of mine bought the smaller version of this set and loves it too.
At this point in time (late Nov 2OO7), though, the newer models are out and so this one is likely outdated or will be discontinued soon. But if you can get one for a solid discount off the new models (say $15OO?) you wouldn't be unhappy.
And as many others have written, set the Picture Mode to something other than Vivid for a more natural, pleasing view.

* We love it! ...
We purchased this TV Jan 1, 2OO7 from here on Amazon. The price was great! We purchased the wall mount at the same time and got both with a combined total, with shipping, that was less than that of any store around us. l looked for months and researched A L0T before purchasing this TV. We finally narrowed it down to about 3 different ones and then went to different stores to see the televisions playing. l did more research and then decided on this model.
We have N0 complaints. The picture is perfect. The colors are absolutely amazing. Whether watching through HD satellite, DVD's, Playstation, and just normal mode, the quality stays the same.
There has not been a person that has come into our house that is not aw struck when they see it hanging on the wall. We have superbowl parties at our house every year. The football games are awesome. There are still many channels that are not HD or shows not broadcast in HD and the quality is still exceptional. We watch a lot of sports and they all look really good if not great!
Along with our surround sound system this tv makes for jealous comments and conversation. We would not change our minds or discourage anyone from this choice. We love it!
