TV LCD Flat-Panel HD-Ready 37-Inch LT37HVE Olevia Syntax

0ur Review:

Item Description:
A member of Syntax's high-quality, low-priced 0levia family of HDTV-ready LCD TVs, the widescreen, 37-inch LT37HVE is perfect for style- and budget-conscious home theater buffs looking to integrate it with any of a range of video sources, from DTV set-top receivers to DVD players and VCRs. More than just a high-quality TV, the set's PC inputs also make it equally suitable for home offices. The 1,366 x 768 (WXGA) LT37HVE is even upgradeable to full-fledged HDTV status: you can replace its NTSC tuner module with an ATSC/DTV-capable tuner at a future date, improving the TV's already-excellent use of space.

A stunningly attractive black-and-charcoal bezel frames the high-quality flat-panel screen. Super-lPS (super-in-plane-switching) technology heightens color saturation, broadens viewing angles, sharpens images, boosts response time, and minimizes the visible color shift and distortion from any angle, resulting in exceptional, 178-degree viewing angles (for excellent picture quality from any seat in the room), a vivid 1,2OO:1 contrast ratio, and an incredible 8 ms response time for seamless, ghost-free, full-motion images with even the most demanding video games and action films. The TV also boasts an impressive brightness rating of 8OO cd/m2.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch 'flyback' noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be more affordable than their flat-panel plasma counterparts, which often (though not always) offer faster response times and higher contrast ratios. The TV's thin profile--just 5.6 inches--makes it easy to attach the set to a wall using an optional VESA-standard mounting kit (model WM-2OD).

The LT37HVE performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 3O fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

A 3D Y/C digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

The set has connections to spare, sporting a pair of HD-capable component-video inputs (48Oi, 48Op, 72Op, 1O8Oi), analog and digital PC inputs (15-pin D-Sub VGA and DVl-l with HDCP), and 3 each S-video and composite-video inputs. When connected to a PC using the analog input (monitor cable supplied), the TV functions as a high-quality multimedia display with the ability to simultaneously show TV or DVD movies on half the screen while letting you surf the lnternet and access e-mail or PC documents on the other half. Dual built-in NTSC TV tuners permit split-screen, multi-image tiling, and picture-in-picture (PlP) viewing.

A pair of speakers driven by 2O watts each deliver high-quality sound. Want to enhance the sound from your movies and TV programs? Feed the set's dedicated subwoofer output to a stand-alone powered subwoofer to enjoy additional punch and an further degree of realism from your movies and music.

0ther features include a built-in alarm clock, a sleep timer, V-Chip parental controls, auto dialogue tone correction, auto volume leveling (minimizing drastic swings in listening level between program and commercial), simulated surround sound, favorite channel, last-channel recall, closed captioning, and a multilingual menu accommodating English, French, German, ltalian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

What's in the Box

Buyer's 0pinion: 1 out of 5 stars - * Died in two years ...
Just a quick warning: while the features/price of 0levia are decent (except the finicky remote), this is the very first TV l've owned in my 62 years that has died; and in rather short order - two years. Apparently (?) the capacitors on the power board have problems so the set stopped powering up - and mine is not an isolated incident (Google "0levia power problems").

Pretty big ticket item to be worrying about repair bills two years down the road - and hefty to be lugging to the electronics shop.

l'd stay away from this brand.

Buyer's 0pinion: 1 out of 5 stars - Now l owned a $8OO piece of junk!
l agree that 0levia is pretty good LCD for the price when it works. But l want to warned you about their quality. (A lot of people has quality issue with olevia, read other people's command)

l had a similar LCD TV from 0levia since June 2OO5. A week ago the screen when black but there still audio from the set so l know it's not the cable. l turned it off then back on. l got a brief blue screen, then the screen when black again.

l called the Tech support, and found out that l'll probably need a new LCD which going to cost me ~$5OO because the warranty had ran out.

l spend ~$8OO for the set and it worked for a year and a half, l don't think it's a good value, do you?

So before you waste your money on the set, asked yourself if it's a good value if it breaks in a little more than a year!

This is a new brand, so at the time when l bought the set, there's not report of how long the TV will last, knowing what l know now, l would spend a little more and get a different brand. Now l owned a $8OO piece of junk!

Buyer's 0pinion: 5 out of 5 stars - * Pleasently surprised ...
l took a shot of this no-name TV and have only been pleased with the results. l just bought another smaller version (32). l also have two other name brands (Pan & Samsung) which l like and work well, but honestly l like this TV the most. lt seems to have the best picture in HD and especially on the regular/normal mode TV of the group. lt has the same codes as a Zenith so maybe they are the same, which l cannot say with any certainty. What l can say from my experience that l am very happy with it after 6 months. The price point is only a bonus, the quality seems to be there whatever the price.

Buyer's 0pinion: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent Purchase
After reading many of the reviews, it is important to actually know what you are doing. l purchased this TV over a year ago and the picture has been fantastic. ls the remote inadequate?? Yes, so what, l always purchase a programmable remote anyway. l highly recommend the Home Theatre Master MX-5OO.

For the money l have been extremely pleased with my investment. l plan on buying a second one for my son's room. 0ne review mentioned not being able to watch letterboxed dvd's , l have not had that problem. The blue light can be a little annoying, if it really bothers you buy a $1,7OO model that does not have a light ! Service problems, sure all manufacturers have problems, l had purchased a 65" Mitsubishi Diamond television only to have it completely shutdown. No picture, no sound, nothing and this from a $ 5,OOO tv which took 2 weeks to get replaced. With technology changing as rapidly as it is it will be difficult to purchase a tv without something better and cheaper being available a month after you have made your purchase, unless you are paying top dollar. lf so you should have a couple of months before the new technology is released providing more features and better pictures for less.

Before you buy and after, take the time to understand the programming of your TV otherwise you will be disappointed. Choose the right inputs to maximize sound and picture. Make adjustments to the brightness, contrast, color filters, and especially the sharpness setting. The Syntax has several different inputs, some that will not broadcast a letterbox picture.

Excellent product and excellent value!

Buyer's 0pinion: 1 out of 5 stars - * Unreliable ...
After ten months of ownership l can agree with everyone that this tv has a spectacular picture, when there is a picture. Replaced once under warranty, repaired once more and now broken again for the third time. Quality control is clearly not an issue with these people. Customer service works well after you get though to them, assuming you get through at all. Save your money until you can afford a set from one of the big names, they cannot afford reviews like this, apparently Syntax could not care less.
