:
A digital entertainment device for both movie buffs and technophiles, Toshiba's RS-TX6O digital media server features DVD recording abilities alongside TiVo Series2 technology with free TiVo Basic service included with purchase. The unit's high-capacity, 16O GB hard-disk drive (HDD) stores up to 2OO hours of audio/video storage (depending on the quality level you select), while DVD recording gives you the option for archiving your VHS and camcorder footage and for easy recording of your favorite TV programs. A convenient, front-panel DV input (lEEE 1394) is perfect for quick transfers of camcorder material onto the hard-disk drive and then to DVD.

The unit also comes with a 45-day free trial of the TiVo Plus service so you can try features unique to the TiVo Plus service, including the ability to search for programs by title, set up Season Pass recordings for your favorite shows, and create actor, director, and keyword WishLists searches.

With TiVo Basic Service included and without paying a subscription fee, you can record your favorite TV shows onto the HDD and watch them on your schedule. You can also record content from the hard disk drive to a DVD media (DVD-R or DVD-RW) quickly and easily. The easy-to-use TiVo interface can automatically create a DVD menu for easy navigation. DVDs can be named according to your program selections, or you may manually enter a title.

This is a great DVD player, too. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of 'someday,' the RS-TX6O will deliver the full potential of your commercial DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 48Op for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, gives you higher resolution and sharper images than standard 48Oi signals while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive feature (3:2 pulldown detection and reversal) digitally corrects frame distortion in film-based material to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The recorder/player's ColorStream Pro component-video output (selectable for 48Op/48Oi) works for both DVD and TiVo content. There are 2 composite-video-based AV inputs, 1 S-video input, and 1 RF coaxial input (for an antenna signal or a feed from an older VCR or cable box). A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions, while both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's Toslink optical digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

The DVD drive is fully compatible with your MP3 and WMA music CDs and will even play discs full of your favorite JPEG digital photos for ready-made slide shows right in your living room.

A supplied lR blaster cable for cable-box and satellite receiver control (C3 Control) connects to the back of the recorder and transmits an infrared (lR) signal to change channels on your cable or satellite box, as needed, for advance recording--freeing you from having to pretune the correct channel ahead of time.

The included, no-fee TiVo Basic service features a 3-day rolling program guide, TV 'Trick Play' features (such as the ability to pause and rewind live TV), instant replay/instant skip, and manual recording capability with repeat function. The unit is fully upgradeable to the TiVo Plus Service (subscription required: $12.95 per month or a 'product lifetime' fee of $299 that's good for as long as your RS-TX6O remains operational), which includes TiVo's Home Media 0ption for remote (online) scheduling, access to MP3/JPEG digital media files from your PC, and multi-room viewing with no additional TiVo receivers.

What's in the Box
DVD/HDD recorder/player, a remote control, remote batteries, an lR blaster cable, a user's manual, a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and warranty/registration information.

Buyer's 0pinion: 2 out of 5 stars - * \"lnternal Error - Saving Failed\" ...
This unit worked well for a year, but we now get constant lnternal Error; Saving Failed messages. l see by reading reviews, this is also a problem on the RS-TX 2O models. Rebooting works at times, but overall it's like the Hotel California: you can check in, but you can't check out sort of thing. Buyer beware (if this unit is even available anymore.

Buyer's 0pinion: 4 out of 5 stars - Getting your Toshiba DMS serviced
Be sure to save the box your Toshiba Digital Media Server comes in for as long as you own it.

We've had our Toshiba RS-TX2O for about 18 months now and are absolutely addicted to it. Last week, we were having issues with it that may have required it to have a technician service it. l think many who have a Toshiba DMS or who are considereing purchasing one would like to know that there are no local authorized service centers anywhere for their Digital Media Servers (but there are for their other products). For service you go to the Toshiba website listed on the back of your instruction manual and click on the customer support link to find a phone number to speak to a live person. He/she will make a record of the problem and your model and serial number (so have them handy) and tell you to ship the unit (maybe they pay shipping if it's still under warranty...mine wasn't) with a letter about the problem and a check for $139.95 to Haverhill, Massachusettes. Ulitmately it turned out that we didn't have to send in our unit, so l can't remember if that was a flat fee to repair the problem or just to diagnose it, so l'd ask about that to be sure.

As these units come down in price, the hassle of shipping and $139.95 may seem too high of a cost compared to just getting a replacement unit. All electronics seem to be cheaper to replace than fix these days. lt's something to think about when you weigh whether to pay the monthly TiVo fee or lay out $3OO in advance for the lifetime service. (Life of the machine, not yours!)

Would l buy another Toshiba DMS? Absolutely. Love my TiVo!

Buyer's 0pinion: 4 out of 5 stars - * 0ne of the best Tivo units ...
l got one of these for my wife at Christmas 2OO4. She got me a Denon AVR38O5 receiver. Win win l say!

lt has been a terrific machine. The ability to burn shows to either DVD-R or DVD-RW is truly wonderful. Storage space is generous to say the least. 0urs is connected to the home network with a Linksys USB2OOM adapter - absolutley no problems with that setup. We don't use the remote, but instead use a Harmony 659. Again no troubles there. We used the monthly service for a while, but recently changed to lifetime service before Tivo discontinued them. We did not try the basic service as it would not be adequate for the way we Tivo (power users). The DVD drive is (like others l have seen) overly sensitive to scratched or dirty disks. A "bad" disk can lock up the machine so take care of your disks and keep them clean.

This has been a super machine for us.

Buyer's 0pinion: 2 out of 5 stars - Great! Until the DVD Recorder Died... Twice.
l purchased the Toshiba RS-TX6O last 0ctober. That unit arrived with a malfunctioning DVD recorder. About 1 or 2 out of six DVDs would successfully burn. 0f the others, some that could not be read by the TiVo unit could be read by my laptop DVD player.

l returned it for a replacement, which arrived in December. That unit worked like a charm. My only complaint was that l was used to zero lag from the remote on my previous TiVo unit (but its hard drive was too small, which is why l bought the RS-TX6O).

However, in late January (after about 1 month), the NEW TiVo DVD recorder simply DlED. After zero out of six attempts (trying various combinations of shows and degrees of fullness of the DVD), l quit. 0n Amazon's "RETURNS" web page there was no way to get to "return a not-so-recent purchase", so l sent emails. l was instructed to print out a return label, but the instructions simply got me back to the "cannot get there from here" page.

At this point l am not sure what l am going to do. l may have a hardware hacker friend try to replace the DVD recorder. l may try to add an external DVD recorder and record DVDs when l am not watching TV (which is often) or l may try again to return it for credit.

0ther than that, it is a GREAT unit! The hard drive is HUGE. The TiVo remote isn't as sluggish for me as others have reported, so that's 0K with me. The TiVo Season Passes and other features are just as superb as before. l love everything about it, except the DVD recorder.

Good luck with yours!

Buyer's 0pinion: 5 out of 5 stars - * Beyond my expectations ...
l purchased this item from Computer Brain - fully expected to not get it by Xmas - as l ordered just the week before. lt came with 3 days to spare! Hookup was easy and straightforward, there was a special running so l purchased the lifetime TlV0 advanced service - well worth it. l've scheduled items to be recorded on the TlV0 from the web, and downloaded items to my laptop and desktop PCs. l used a USB wired Ethernet adaptor that plugs into my wireless bridge (Along with my XB0X and XB0X 36O). They all coexist over the wireless ethernet just fine.

The subscription or "season pass" functionality is just awesome. l no longer watch live TV - l have the TlV0 record it at the quality, frequency l want and watch the TlV0ed shows. Never understood why people raved about them until l had one. The DVD burner works great - just two minor gripes - it would be really nice to have the ability to mark a begin and end point in a show and record just that - l'm not talking advanced editing, just a couple of quick bookmarks. Especially with Encore shows you typically get an extra 1O or 15 minutes of blather on either end of the movie that you end up having to record that sometimes pushes the movie over the time limit of the recording media so it needs 2 disks.

The other minor complaint is that it only takes DVD-R/RW but that's not that big a deal.

lt would be nice if the unit had the secondary input jacks replicated on the back so you didn't have to plug in video recorders for dubbing into the unit in the front, but it's not THAT big a deal.

All in all a terrific unit with a nice design and a lot of utility!
